  2. AppleTalk Options Control Panel Read Me

IMPORTANT  Do not use the AppleTalk Options control panel unless instructed to do so by your network administrator.  AppleTalk Options control panel is an unsupported utility developed by Apple Computer, Inc. and requires OT 1.1.1b6 or a later release of Open Transport.  Future releases of Open Transport (version 1.5 and later) will provide this capability without requiring this separate control panel.

  7. About the AppleTalk Options feature
  8. This feature allows a user to suppress unwanted router-related alerts.

  11. Why suppress router-related alerts?
  12. Some Ethernet-ISDN bridges used for remote LAN-to-LAN connectivity drop the connection when there is no active data transfer, and dial on demand when there is information to be transferred. If a user’s local network does not include an AppleTalk router, a message appears each time the connection is dropped. Use the AppleTalk Options control panel to prevent the alerts from being displayed.

  15. Disabling the router-related alerts feature

  17. To install and use the AppleTalk Options control panel, follow these steps:

  19. 1. Drop the AppleTalk Options control panel onto a closed System Folder. 
  20.  
  21. 2. Open the Control Panels folder from the  menu.
  22.  
  23. 3. Open the AppleTalk Options control panel.
  24.  
  25. 4. To eliminate unwanted alerts, click the “Suppress router-related alerts” checkbox to put a check in it.

  34. 5.    Close the AppleTalk Options control panel.

  36. 6. Either turn AppleTalk off and on, or reboot your system in order for your setting to take effect.

  39. Re-enabling the router-related alerts feature
  40.  
  41. To revert to the normal Open Transport mode, uncheck the “Suppress router-related alerts” check box in the control panel and reboot your system.

  44. WARNING:  Simply removing the control panel from your Control Panels folder does not re-enable the alerts. You must uncheck the “Suppress router-related alerts” checkbox in the control panel.
